The Stone Whisperer
Andrej Mitevski possesses the rare skill of bringing forth the heart of the stone into visible, remarkable forms. The gentle curves and shapes of his hallmark sculptures seem to emerge organically from within the stone, often counterbalancing the raw material's inherent harshness.

“My organic forms emphasize that life and nature overcome all obstacles to growth. In my work, the light and the dark elements are always at play, as is the relationship between the void space and the solid mass of my sculptures. This interplay between counterbalanced masses opens a window into the stone’s inner world in a manner visible to the human eye.”

Mitevski speaks with the materials he works with. “During my school days I discovered that even simple clay could talk to me and that I could hear it. At that time, I realized that everything around us is an expression of life itself. Then, I discovered stone and marble.” He fell in love with stone.
Today, Andrej talks with each block of stone he intends to carve. He listens to it carefully, lovingly. Then they begin to "dance" together, negotiating the shape the stone and the sculptor agree to form. The stone whispers to him how to work on it. Andrej may be the stone-whisperer of our age.

Stone, especially marble, has become his primary inspiration, and his emblem of rebellion against transiency. “A piece of marble stands before me, created ages ago. Now it whispers to me its story - the story of the beginning, of life, and of the forces at play. This is why I endeavor to imbue my artworks with a sense of timelessness, avoiding any signs of specific time periods or contemporariness."

However, his work is not always ahistorical, he says. "I experiment and explore, and I have utilized contemporary devices, such as motion sensors, light effects, and other interactive elements, to open a window of experience for the audience."
For this sculptor, creating art serves a timeless purpose. "All art forms and quests for answers aim to erase the limits of the known by touching upon new horizons of sensory experience and breaching into the unknown. Windows we artists create for the audience pave the way for further horizons and further quests into the unknown, ad infinitum."

Mitevski compares the process of sculpting of a timeless, yet time-bound material to meditation. "Nothing else exists or matters at the moment of creation," he says. "I dwell in a world of my own. There is nothing else in it except the marble, the work, and the idea of a sculpture waiting to be released from the heart of the stone."

Andrej's studio, located in a clandestine corner in his hometown of Skopje, serves as a sanctuary for both nature and marble. In his magical hideaway in the woods, friendly birds, turtles and bugs keep him company as he envisions and crafts his masterpieces.

“Just as nature formed today’s stone millions of years ago, and just as others throughout history have created temples and sculptures from stone, I too create sculptures as monuments for the future out of this same material.”
